Covenant Children’s Recognized for Patient Safety

Covenant Children's was recently recognized as the Children's Hospitals' Solutions for Patient Safety (SPS) Hospital of the Month for March 2014. This is the second time in eight months the facility has received this recognition.

"We participate with 77 other children's hospitals from all around the country," said Chris Dougherty, CEO of Covenant Women's and Children's and Lakeside campus. "We are honored to again receive this recognition."

Through transparent sharing of data, successes and learning, Children's Hospitals' SPS is working to achieve specific goals to reduce harm in pediatric hospitals across the country. Specifically, by year-end 2014, Covenant Children's will be working with SPS hospitals to collectively achieve a 40 percent reduction in certain hospital-acquired conditions; a 20 percent reduction in readmissions and a 25 percent reduction in serious safety events.

"Perhaps the most unique and groundbreaking nature of our work is that while we are, in essence, competitors, we've put that competition aside when it comes to patient safety," said Michael Fisher, SPS chairman and CEO of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. "We transparently share across our institutions with one simple goal in mind: to get every child we care for home safely with their families."

SPS began in Ohio in 2009 as a network of eight hospitals. It has now expanded to 78 hospitals across the country, all focused on reducing harm by addressing specific hospital acquired conditions and building a culture of safety within each hospital.

The organization receives funding from the federal Partnership for Patients initiative, a nationwide public-private collaboration to improve the quality, safety, and affordability of health care for all Americans. SPS is the only such effort in the nation that is focused on improving pediatric care and reducing associated Medicaid costs.

Covenant Children's is the region's only licensed children's hospital, and one of only eight in the state of Texas. The hospital serves a 62-county area, including West Texas and Eastern New Mexico and is the only designated Level II Pediatric Trauma Center in the region. Covenant Children's is the only licensed children's hospital between El Paso and Ft. Worth. It is a 73-bed facility with a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit; the region's only accredited Pediatric Emergency Department; a Pediatric Medical/Surgical Unit featuring a "My Town" theme to offer a fun, healing environment; and a level III C Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the highest rated NICU in the region.
