Covenant Children's Teams Up with Samaritan's Purse and Children's Heart Project

LUBBOCK, TX – Covenant Children's is teaming up with Samaritan's Purse this month to help children in need of heart surgery through the Children's Heart Project. Representatives from both Covenant Children's and Samaritan's Purse were at the Preston Smith International Airport on March 13 to welcome two Honduran children and their mothers to Lubbock, Texas.

Children's Heart Project is a ministry of Samaritan's Purse. They identify children needing surgery and local doctors and hospitals in the United States and Canada willing to donate their services. Covenant Children's was one of the hospitals willing to donate services for these two Honduras children.

18-month-old Daniel Canales and 8-year-old Yesica Pena came to Lubbock to have a team of Covenant Children's physicians evaluate them. After various thorough medical evaluations they will undergo potentially life-saving heart surgeries.

Dr. Andrew Robinson is the Pediatric Cardiologist that will evaluate both Canales and Pena. Dr. James Harrell and Dr. Richard Ranne are the Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeons that will operate on the children. Marty Harrell is a PICU Nurse Educator at Covenant Children's and was also the coordinator of the project. She went over to Honduras to pick up Daniel, Yesica, and their mothers, and escorted them back to Lubbock.

While in Lubbock, the families will stay with a host family and will also have a host church. The host church is Indiana Avenue Baptist Church. The kids are scheduled to have their surgeries at the end of March and will stay in Lubbock to the end of April to recover.
