Congenital Heart Defects
A congenital heart defect is an abnormality present at a child’s
birth. The heart could be be missing all or part of a heart structure
or the parts could be arranged incorrectly. Often, a congenital heart
defect is a hole between parts of the heart or leaky heart valves.
Congenital heart defects can be detected before birth, right after birth,
or at some point in the future. Warning signs include a heart murmur,
a bluish tint to the skin, and slow growth.
Congenital heart defects range from the relatively simple to life-threatening.
A physician can discuss surgery to correct these defects.
