Patients and Visitors

Children are the future, and we want to invest in them, their health, and the quality of their varied lives. We are thankful for the opportunity to take care of them. We know what an important task that is.

Pediatric surgery can be a scary thing both for young patients and their parents. We have put together a few resources to help put the whole family’s mind at ease and make sure you are prepared for your surgical appointment at Covenant Children’s.

Condition H (HELP)

At Covenant Children's Hospital, we strive to provide the best care and safest environment possible. In continuing our ongoing efforts of improvement and eliminating problems that affect the delivery of care, we are offering a program called Condition H.

We hope to empower patients and families to access care, decrease anxiety, and improve patient safety. If you have any questions, please discuss them with your healthcare team.

  • Allows patients and families to call a Rapid Response Team during emergent situation or if their needs are not being recognized
  • H stands for HELP
  • Patient safety initiative

  • To be proactive, increase patient safety and satisfaction
  • To provide patients and families access to care
  • Ability to communicate their needs and concerns

  • If a noticeable medical change occurs in patient and healthcare team is not recognizing the concern
  • If a breakdown in communication or confusion in the plan of care occurs
  • If you feel your concerns are not being heard, recognized, or met

  • Identify the problem and communicate with your primary nurse
  • If problem persists, contact charge nurse and physician
  • If the problem still persists and you still have concerns, activate Condition H

  • Dial 50019 on hospital telephone and put on the call light
  • Identify the call as Condition H. Provide your name, location, and reason for the response request
  • A Rapid Response Team will respond to assess and treat as necessary

At Covenant Children’s, we strive to promote your child’s physical and emotional comfort throughout their hospital experience. In 2018, Covenant Children's created a Comfort Committee that, in early 2019, created a pediatric Comfort Policy - the first hospital in the region to have such a policy - outlining the steps we take to decrease fear while minimizing pain and discomfort. This Comfort Policy is an extension of our Patient and Family Centered philosophy to care.

Essential components
  • In collaboration with the family and child’s team, we establish an individualized comfort care plan based upon an assessment
  • We empower family caregivers to nurture and support their child during procedures
  • We provide developmentally-based patient/family preparation and education
Comfort care plan

We utilize a combination of evidence-based strategies based upon your child’s age, sensory sensitivities, and assessment and may include:

  • Use of comfort positions
  • Distraction and coping interventions
  • Sucrose and breast feeding for infants
  • Topical numbing agents
  • Pharmacologic approaches or sedation, as indicated (e.g. younger children, children with developmental disabilities, etc. may require some level of pharmacologic intervention or sedation)
Comfort position posters

The comfort posters below resulted from our Comfort Committee and their work in early 2019. They provide suggestions on ways for parents to comfort their child during medical procedures.

Spiritual Care services are available to help meet your spiritual and emotional needs during your stay at Covenant. Chaplains provide spiritual and emotional reassurances and are able to ministers effectively in a variety of situations. Acknowledging diversity of religious beliefs and cultural traditions, Covenant’s non-denominational staff is prepared to assist you, whatever your needs.

For Catholics, a Catholic priest is available to administer the Sacrament of the Sick to those who request it and communion is offered regularly.

The chapel is located in the lobby of the first floor. The chapel is open 24/7 to anyone seeking a place for spiritual reflection, regardless of religious affiliation. The chapel may also be used for non-spiritual quiet reflection and contemplation.

Mass is available in the chapel daily. For patients unable to leave their room, the service is broadcast on channel 2.

Non-denominational chaplains may stop by your child’s room. They will discuss any spiritual care needs you may have. If you would like a chaplain, priest, or any other religious figure present at any point, please notify your care team.

At Covenant Children's, we want all of our patients to feel as comfortable as possible while at our hospital. That's why we offer an interpreter service for all non-English-speaking patients and their family members. If you need interpreter assistance, simply alert your nurse that you would like to request an interpreter and one will be provided to you.

For more information about our interpretive services or to request assistance in advance of your stay, contact Interpreter Services at 806-725-3041.

Pet Therapy enhances the patient’s hospital experience while simultaneously offering therapeutic benefits. A cat or dog, even if it isn’t the family pet, can be a tremendous comfort to a child who is separated from the comforts of home.

Covenant Children's welcomes pet handlers and their pets to pay a visit to children in the hospital. All pet therapy is coordinated through our Guest Services team to ensure coordination of services and safety of our patients.

Pets and their handlers come to Covenant Children’s on a regular basis to visit patients and pet therapy can be requested. If interested, request pet therapy through your patient care team!
