Stories of Hope and Giving

Children and families come to us from all walks of life, with all sorts of conditions. Covenant Children's Hospital exists to make sure these kids have a healthy and hopeful future. We are continually amazed at the strength, courage, and optimism our patients and their families bring to our door, no matter what obstacles they face. The stories featured here are only a sampling of the miracles that take place at Covenant Children's Hospital every day. Meet a few of these kids. We think you'll enjoy learning about how incredible they are.

Lindsey Callaway

The Callaway family turned heartache into hope for children at Covenant Children's Hospital. On December 30, 1998, their beloved daughter, Lindsey, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. She received her care at Covenant Children's Hospital and made an incredible impact on everyone she interacted with during her treatment. Her most significant impact was on the Children's Hospital staff, who truly became part of the Callaway family.

In January 2001, Lindsey lost her battle with cancer at the age of 16.

Since then, the Callaway family has held a Lindsey Callaway Memorial Toy Drive annually, raising more than $165,000 in toys, learning devices, games, televisions and clothing for the children at Covenant Children's Hospital. Each December, the Callaway family and their friends and supporters return to Covenant Children's Hospital to deliver the toys and other donations personally and interact once again with the staff.

Because of her experiences during Lindsey's illness, her sister, Jessie, made it a personal goal to become a pediatric nurse. In the fall of 2011, this dream became a reality and Jessie joined the staff at Covenant Children's Hospital. Jessie was truly affected by Lindsey's experiences and by the caring and compassionate staff, who provided a great example of the compassionate care that makes up the heart of Covenant Children's Hospital.

In her brief life, Lindsey made an incredible impact on her world, and her legacy will continue to live on forever through the love and hope that her family and friends share with the patients, families and staff at Covenant Children's Hospital.

Kolt McDaniel

When the McDaniels went in for one of their final ultrasounds toward the end of their pregnancy, they soon found out their lives would be changed forever. With just eight weeks to go, Shay and J.D. McDaniel found out that their unborn son had a life-threatening cardiac defect - hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

Covenant Children's Hospital and our skilled pediatric cardiology team did everything in their power to save the little boy's life. Kolt was actually delivered in Covenant's Heart and Vascular Institute. Within minutes, Dr. Andrew Robinson performed angioplasty in order to open Kolt's restrictive atrial septal defect. This approach presented the only hope for Kolt's survival and was the first of its kind performed at Covenant. At four days old, Dr. James Harrell performed Kolt's first open heart surgery, a Norwood procedure. After a month in the pediatric ICU, the McDaniel family's prayers were answered. Kolt finally got to go home and meet his two big brothers! When Kolt was six months old, Dr. Harrell performed a second heart surgery, a Glenn procedure.

Kolt is now a very busy little boy who loves life and spending time with his brothers! He will need one more heart surgery when his weight reaches fifty pounds and he continues to attend weekly physical and occupational therapy. He is making great progress!

Covenant Children's Hospital – taking a boy with a broken heart and giving him a lifetime to become a heartbreaker!
